Climate day in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains

In Imi -n-Ifri village, 6 km from the old city Demnat and1 hour from Marrakech, the Climathon High Atlas was organized in its first edition and its first time in Morocco, as part of the global and universal event Climathon, 24-hour on climate change which take place simultaneously in major cities around the world on 27 October 2017.

The number of registered cities this year exceeded more than 100 cities around the world, among them 3 cities in Africa, the only “Imi n’ifri” initiative in Morocco was nominated Climathon High Atlas, hosted and orgnaized by the sustainable tourism project Espace Tamount in cooperation with Tifawin Union, a strong participation of local actors of Tifni rural community and other cities representatives were with us to celebrate this historic climate day.
As a managers organizers of this 1st edition, the Climathon High Atlas official program has featured various activities in raising awareness about environmental conservation and climate action, in this context a round table on “Morocco’s Vision 2030 to achieve SDGs Sustainable Development Goals in Mountain and rural areas was animated.
The event was an occasion too, to give for the representative of Demnate, Ouarzazate and Azilal urban cities an introduction about the convention of Mayors, as well an overview about CES-Med “Cleaner Energy Saving Mediterranean Cities” of Human Dynamics was presented to the participants, the project’s goal is to promote urban development and sustainable energy challenges in the Southern Mediterranean countries.
Workshops were organized in the old Amazigh Moorish green jobs and methods of protecting the environnement more and more in disappearance, such as traditional way of oil extraction, medicinal plants and berber carpet…etc. In parallel the Young Climathon High Atlas : a workshop in good and responsible action of the environment preservation was organized profit to 90 primary schools children of Demnat city.
The Climathon as well was an occasion to send a letter to the Moroccan Ministry of Culture and UNESCO for the inscription of the natural bridge Imi n’ifri as a natural and geological world heritage, a petition on this subject has been published : .

The first edition of the Climathon High Atlas was able to ensure the exchange of knowledge on climate change and the conservation of natural ressources in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, which are an important suppliers of water, food, hydroelectricity and other mineral resources and biodiversity, increasingly vulnerable to climate change. Today, the Moroccan state is in front of the obligation and the urgency of drafting a law for the protection of mountains against climate change, irresponsible actions of human beings and create an agency dedicated to the protection of mountain and rural areas in Morocco.
